Friday the 25th of July was a sad day for Roscrea, as the parish said goodbye to Fr Colm Hogan, who is now the new curate in the Shannon Parish, in Co. Clare.

Fr Colm has been a very active member of the local community, and throughout his five years he had become one of the areas most popular residents.

Naturally he will be missed and the people of Roscrea were very sorry to see him go. Fr Colm has been a curate in Roscrea since his ordination five years ago. In that time he not only settled into priesthood, he also adapted excellently to his priestly minstery and gave himself wholeheartedly to many different tasks in the parish.

Fr Colm will be remembered for many things but especially for his care and attention to those in the Dean Maxwell Home, and the Laurels. His kindness to the sick, the dying and the bereaved in the area was also greatly appreciated, and will be an eternal legacy to his time here in Roscrea.

The pupils of the Sacred Heart Primary School enjoyed his many visits to their classrooms, and his help in their preparation fro Confirmation and First holy Communion.

Fr. Colm will also be fondly remembered for his beautiful singing voice, which he was only to willing to share with the Church Choir and the Folk group. Acting as Cantor with the Folk Group in Lourdes in 2001 & 2002 was one of the highlights of his singing and he managed to combine this with entertaining the sick and the many pilgrims present in the nightly sing-songs.

As regards the wider community, Fr Colm was very involved with a number of organizations, which benefited from his vast array of talents. In the Musical Society we saw him cast as Me Bumble in the sellout show Oliver and this year he returned to the stage to play the part of Stuart Cameron in Brigadoon.

Fr Colm was also a nifty hurler and while not on the pitch he served his time as a selector for the under 16 and minor teams. Fr Colm also served on the Roscrea GAA club Committee for five years, and as P.R.O he kept us informed of all the happenings and matches etc that were taking place.

Away from the workplace Fr Colm became an accomplished golfer during his stay in Roscrea, particularly the fairway banter where many a Tipp match was relived, won and sometimes lost.

Fr. Colm touched many people in many different circles and we thank him for that. He is wished every grace that he needs for his future ministry. And from what we believe he will need plenty of it! as one of the schools in Shannon where Colm will spend a considerable amount of his time, has none other than Ger Loughnane as its principal. Who knows perhaps its in Colm that Ger will finally meet his match.

In concluding lets just say, We hope Colm carries many happy and fond memories of Roscrea, with him to Shannon, and we are quite sure there will always be a warm welcome for him, when he returns on what we trust will be lots of visits back to Roscrea.

Of course while we are sad to say goodbye to Colm, the parish will do doubt extend a warm welcome to our new curate, Fr Pat Treacy. Fr Treacy was ordained in 1992 and has spent time in Bodyke/Tuamgraney, Quin and Doora/Berefield. Fr. Pat will live in the Curate's House on the Convent Hill and will be responsible for Fr. Hogan's station area. Fr. Pat will join the parish on Monday the 4th of August and we wish him every success.
