Siobhan Mc Mahon, Kennedy Park Roscrea represented St. Cronan’s Services, Roscrea and Special Olympics Ireland on the first ever Ladies football team to travel to Luxembourg on May 27th for this years European Ladies Football Competition which was held over 3 days. Twelve countries took part in this competition.
The Ireland team that travelled to Luxembourg was made up of athletes from all over Ireland (North & South). Training for this competition commenced in October 2003 with a number of trail days. The team to travel to Luxembourg was named in January 2004 in Dublin. Since January Siobhan has attended a number of training sessions, which were held in Dublin. These sessions concentrated mainly on physical exercise and ball skills.
The training weekends also consisted of talks on diets and exercise and had a social side as well with evening entertainment included dinner laid on in the hotels.
Siobhan herself is no stranger to Special Olympics she has represented Ireland and St. Cronan's before in Indiana America in 1987 where she won gold and bronze medals in the 100 meters and the relay race competitions. Since then she has participated in different Competitions down through the years including the European games in Dublin in 1985 where she won gold medals in the 100 and 200 meters and the relay race. In 1991 Siobhan took part in the National games in Dublin where she won gold, silver and bronze medals in the 200 meters, the high jump and the relay race. In 2000 Siobhan was introduced to the team sport soccer at St. Cronan's Centre by her coach Rody Spillane. St Cronan's were very successful and participated in the National games in Dublin in June 2003 and also won the Munster 5 aside Soccer League in 2002, 2003. Because of Siobhan's success at this level she was put forward for the trails for the first ever ladies football team and was chosen to represent St. Cronan's Service.
The European Championships took place in Luxembourg from May 27th - 31st 2004 with the 'Team Ireland' team winning Bronze.
The management, Staff and all of Siobhan's friends in St. Cronan's would like to congratulate Siobhan on her achievements in Luxembourg as she continues to 'fly the flag' for St. Cronan's Service Roscrea.
