Roscrea Tidy Towns Committee

To: All residents and members of the business community.

From: Roscrea Tidy Towns Committee.

The time of year is now upon us when judging of our town takes place. The town was judged on the 26th June last year, so at this stage, we are now asking you to observe the following for the next couple of weeks, while the first judging take place. If the town is successful in the first judging, there will be a follow up judging in August, we would, therefore, appeal to you in the interest of future business in the town, and as a means of promoting Roscrea as a tourist town to keep the following in mind and help make the streets as attractive as possible.

1. Keep a check on litter outside your premises all through the day. Please do not sweep the footpath in the evenings and leave the sweepings on the street. Staff have been observed doing this. The litter will blow up or down the street, and give a much more untidy appearance. It would be much appreciated if these sweepings were collected and placed in a covered bin.

2. Please remove all weeds or grass growing outside your premises, which are on roofs, chimneys and window sills.

3. If your premises is a take away, or situated near one, please ensure all chip carons and bags are collected from the street and not allowed to be strewn around. All chip bags and cartons should be in covered bins so that birds, dogs etc. cannot pull them apart, leaving a very untidy appearance outside your premises. If your premises sells Mr. Freeze, ice-cream, chewing gum etc. please ensure all plastic wrappers are put in bins and not left all day and night on the footpath.

4. Street trading is not recommended and products for sale should be stored inside shops, and not on tables or stalls on the street. This type of trading comes under the heading of untidiness and affects the town's marking, it also prevents access on the footpaths.

5. Window boxes with fresh flowers look much more attractive than plastic, artificial and faded flowers in boxes. Artificial flowers do not impress, and do not add to the appearance of any premises. If and where possible, the Tidy Towns committee would welcome as many window boxes of fresh flowers, or hanging baskets as possible.

6. All HB signs should also be removed from premises, as they take from the streetscape and were commented on in last year's report.

7. The few remaining plastic signs and nameplates should also be removed as they detract from a premises, wooden shop fronts are much more attractive and more appealing, and judges comment much more favourably on them. Our approach roads are also becoming cluttered with illegal signage and these should be removed or planning permission obtained for same.

8. If your shopfront is in need of repair, replacing or painting or perhaps, a gate or railing needs paint, it would benefit the town and its marking in the Tidy Towns competition if you could have something done about it immediately. If its not done before the first judging it would benefit to have it upgraded and more colourful for the second judging in August.

As the Fianna Fail slogan said A lot done, more to do. This is the motto of the Tidy Town Committee, and each year with the support of everyone, we endeavour to make Roscrea more beautiful and more attractive as a tourist town.

The members of the Tidy Towns Committee are out working in various areas of the town each evening. They would welcome your help, and invite you to join them any evening. At this late stage, we count on your continued support, we thank all who have supported our ideals to date, and look forward through working in partnership with each other to make Roscrea one of the best towns not only in Tipperary but in Ireland.

This is our town, let us be proud of it.

Ni neart go chur le chéile.

John Byrne, Chairman.
