The latest news and events from Roscrea Youth Centre

On Wednesday the 14th of June, Roscrea Youth Centre celebrated a fitting and meaningful end of year Mass and prize giving ceremony. This night is always a special night in the life of the Club, as it offers an opportunity to reflect, give thanks and celebrate with members, committee and friends of the club.  Music was provided by members of the folk group and by a choir made up by members of the club.  The music this year was excellent both in delivery and the atmosphere it evoked.  Mairead Moloney then opened the mass in her words of welcome.  Mairéad was last year’s junior club member of the year and the committee was proud of her for opening the mass.  Fr. Lorcan then asked everyone to look at some of the words hung on the backdrops that decorated the wall.  The theme of the Mass was “what’s it like to be a young person today”.  Fr. Lorcan drew attention to words like ‘fun’, ‘happy’, ‘dreams’, but also words like ‘angry’, ‘frustrated’ and ‘sadness’.  He then read out a poem called ‘being young’ by Leanne Loughnane.  They everyone paused and thought of one young person they were going to remember during the mass.

The opening reflection was beautiful and was read and wrote by Niamh Fletcher and Jason Simmons.  The latter was last year’s Senior Club member of the year.  Anna Downey (Committee Member) read the second reading by St. Paul, which was about the gifts of the spirit and how never to be jealous of one another.  After the Gospel Fr. Lorcan told a story about the money-king, a legend about how a little boy China had faced his fears.  He asked the members to remember three things – firstly being afraid is human and natural but don’t live a life in fear.  Secondly break down your fears one by one, so that you don’t get overwhelmed by them.  One way to do this is to talk to someone you trust about your fears.  Lastly, Fr. Lorcan says our God is not one of fear, rather he understands it.  Love is the biggest antidote to fear, work on overcoming it.  What then followed was the junior club members and three senior club members bringing up five words which were shown to the congregation pinned on the backdrop behind the alter and a prayer was said relating to those words.  The five words were ‘unsure’, ‘believe’ ‘love’, ‘sadness’ and ‘friends’.  As the last prayer was said, Fr. Lorcan just commented that the work the teenagers did in preparing this mass was inspiring.  Every word and prayer was real and heartfelt.  ‘If we listen more to young people’ he said ‘we might be surprised what we hear’.

After communion, Pauraic read out a reflection based on words committee used to describe what it’s like working with young people.  It was simple, yet honest and effective.  Before the final blessing, Fr. Lorcan went on to thank the following people:

 Thanks were extended to:

All who took part in the mass, the gift bearers, all who decorated the hall with Jacqui, Lena and Lily who did the flowers, Leanne Loughnane who did the cover poem, Trish Delaney who did the booklet and a special word of thanks to the choir under the leadership of Margaret and Anne, the members of the Folk Group, Anne, Veronica and Aileen who added so much to our celebration.  Thanks too to the parents/guardians of the choir members who brought them to our music practices.

Thanks to the parents, guardians, neighbours, patrons and friends of the club who have given us much needed support over the last year.  We are a community group and rely on you as a community to help us.  A special word of thanks was given to Imelda and Mai, lifelong friends of the club.   Also special mention was given to Andrew and Mary Walsh who sponsor the Oscars and Mrs. Tobin and Michael who sponsor all prizes and trophies during the night.

Thanks was extended to Elizabeth, Mandy, Johnny Hackett and all in FÁS, to our great friend Brian Redmond warm thanks.  Thanks also to members of the press, Des Walsh & Staff, Neely who holds the keys of the club and to Johnny Downey who always keeps a watchful eye on the club.

Lastly, Fr.  Lorcan thanked Junior and Senior club members, because they are the reason we open the club in the first place.  We have had a great year together’ he said but there are even better times ahead of us.  Fr. Lorcan then thanked our hardworking committee who have put in such a huge effort on sleepovers, swimming, trips to the cinema, bowling, laser quaser and during the summer will be planning our teenage holiday in Ballybunion.  ‘There isn’t a club in the country like you’ Fr.  Lorcan said ‘and it’s single handedly due to the committees dedication and commitment to Roscreas young people.
